Survey
Our first task, completed in November ‘06, was to conduct a Needs Assessment Survey. We distributed surveys to parents of elementary school
children, clients at both medical clinics and to patrons at the Post Office
for one week. The Post Office surveys were hand delivered by a WHO member
during business hours and were for the most part completed and returned
immediately. There were approximately 480 surveys returned from a population
of around 3,000. With our distribution method we were aware there could be multiple
surveys from within one household. The results follow—
| Priority | Planning |
| 1. | Local Swimming Pool | An overwhelming response was noted for a swimming pool. |
| 2. | Health/Wellness Classes | Volunteers are working with the borough within the community schools program. |
| 3. | Transportation Assistance | Grassroots “neighbor helping neighbor” has been initiated to move toward MASCOT or other support. |
| 4. | Meals on Wheels | We found Willow is too small for a separate MoW program. Efforts are directed at embellishing Houston’s program. This requires four things: $50,000 grant annually, 1 van, 1 cook, 1 driver. |
| 5. | Crisis Hotline | A certified rape/child abuse counselor on our team has made great strides to develop closer relationship with and publicize Valley resources. |
| 6. | Cross Country Skiing | (being combined with Health/Wellness class development.) |
Volunteers have formed work groups to develop plans for the top selections. A swimming pool will be our long-term goal. Elaborate notations were made on the broad benefits of a swimming pool in Willow/Upper Susitna Valley. In the meantime we will develop the next four priorities.
