GUEST SPEAKERS

1. Sue Drover:

The Y Community Council has changed its name to Susitna Community Council.

Susitna Community Council asked for a letter of support for a capital improvement project to build an underpass located just north of E. Helena Ave. and south of the Talkeetna Spur Road. It will go under the Parks Hwy connecting Susitna Valley High School on the west side to the Senior Center and future grocery store on the east side. The underpass will facilitate use by pedestrians, the handicapped, dog teams and small motorized vehicles.

Susitna Community Council is also asking parents of students who attend Susitna Valley High School to write letters of support.

MOTION: Mary Shreves moved that WACO send a letter of support for the Parks Hwy underpass. Motion was seconded.
VOTE: Motion passed unanimously.

2. Tom Kluberton:

  • Tomorrow is election day
  • The assembly is working with gravel pit owners to develop a reclamation process or other means of limiting damage to property.
  • The Mat-Su CVB monthly membership luncheon is Friday at noon at Evangelo’s. The McDowell Group will be discussing the Tourism Infrastructure Needs Study.
  • The Mat-Su Borough is hosting a Tourism Summit on Saturday, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Mat-Su Public Safety Building.
  • Federal money is available for scenic byways. The Glenn Hwy is currently designated as a scenic byway and the assembly is working on getting the Park’s Hwy also designated as a scenic byway.
  • Building a convention center here in the Mat-Su is cost prohibitive at present. Mary Shreves asked if we could make use of the Willow Community Center for visitors. Tom will discuss this idea with the assembly.
  • There is currently a Natural Gas Ordinance in draft form.
  • Fish and Game is no longer stocking salmon in Big Lake due to high losses in fish population. They suspect pollution maybe killing the fish.
  • They are breaking ground on the Susitna Valley High School.
  • Bed Tax Grand money may be applied for improvements to the Willow Community Center.
